They’re one of the few household appliances that can save you money — as much as 15 percent off your energy bills — and look good enough to enhance the decor of nearly any room.

Feb 04,  · I installed a Hunter remote ceiling fan about a month ago and it sounds pretty much to have the same operation as yours. You had a black and white from the reciever that connected to incoming power. Then there are wires leaving the reciever to the fan and light dome.

How do I wire a universal remote control for my ceiling fan? I purchased a Hunter Ceiling Fan with a light kit and remote control. It was a display item. I had to get a universal remote with receiver as the original one was not included. From the fan there is a pink, yellow, red, gray, black and white wires. On my new universal remote there are two white and two black and a red. The instructions for the remote says that the red is for the light, one of the black is fan, one of the white is common, the other white is neutral and the other black is hot.

I purchased them both at home depot.

What is the purpose of a ceiling fan? A ceiling fan serves two purposes 1. To provide a breeze thereby creating the “wind chill factor” 2. To circulate the air throughout a room or area Most people who purchase a ceiling fan do so to utilize the first option. You expect to turn on the fan and feel a breeze, or at least some moving air. This is most effective with the fan in downdraft mode on a medium or high speed.

How to Replace a Ceiling Fan Speed Switch: My ceiling fan speed switch broke and it got stuck on high. I had another fan sitting around, so I took the one from that.

In this post i am gonna to share speed controller diagram with low, med and high speed diagrams. On thing more i also shown in the below that how can we control the speed of fan motor using 3 wire ceiling fan capacitor. One thing more we can also use dimmer switch for regulating speed of ceiling fan. However in my last most i shown 5 wire ceiling fan capacitor diagram , in which i also shown a speed controller diagram using speed control switch diagram.

For ceiling fan speed controlling we use mostly two methods in which on is by using speed control using three or five wire capacitor. And other one is using a dimmer switch from which we can control the RPM revolutions per minute of ceiling fan or other fan motor. So First we talk about ceiling fan speed wiring diagrams, which i designed 4 diagram in which i shown Off , low , med and high speed direction of fan motor speed switch controller.

Here is the fan speed low, high and med speed direction diagram, So As you know that by using 3 wire capacitor, we can control the speed of motor using speed regulator switch.

5 Wire Ceiling Fan Capacitor Wiring Diagram

Dec 21, , Now, upon further inspection, there are 2 sets of wires coming into the switch outlet one from the left, one from the right. There are 2 black wires braided and capped, having one black wire leading out for a connection , one red left out for a connection, and 2 white wires braided and capped. There are also the 2 ground wires that have been braided capped and having one leading out for connection.

It just seems that the previous owner had probably combined the two sets of wires to make one switch, when in reality can be made into two switches. My friend says that there is probably another red wire, and says that the previous owner had probably cut it too short that it is unable to be seen.

The white wire should be attached to the white wire from the two-wire cable going up to the light, and the grounds should be attached together and to the switch box. The black or red wire from the two-wire cable going up to the light gets attached to the marked black terminal on the switch.

To use a switch for both the light and the fan you will need wiring that has an extra wire in it. This would be or Wire. Power from the box would be attached to each switch and then the black and red wires would be attached to the other side of each switch. This gives you the ability operate the light and fan separately. For a fan that was not wired this way originally you may be stuck using the pull chains to control the lights and fan.

You will still need to use the pull chain to change the speed on the fan no matter what you do.

Dimmer Switch + Ceiling Fan = Problem

Fan is not working First, check to make sure that all controls on the fan are functional and set properly. The pullchain should be set to an operating speed i. If the fan has a reverse switch, be sure it it is seated fully in the ‘up’ or ‘down’ position. If the fan has a remote, make sure it has a good battery securely in place. If the fan has a more unique or unusual control system you may need to ask more specific questions see our forums.

Ceiling fans have different colored wires coming from the motor that don’t quite match the household circuit wires’ colors. This can create some confusion when it comes to which wires to connect together. Many ceiling fans are designed to be used with or without a light. Because of this design, the manufacturer installs a separate wire for lights, which can vary in insulation colors from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Knowing which wires to connect together eliminates the confusion when you complete the installation. Use a step ladder to reach the electrical box at the ceiling. Hold a non-contact voltage sensor inside the box next to the black wire. The alarm will sound and the sensor will flash if electricity is present. When installing a ceiling fan with the down rod, you can insert the ceiling fan down rod into the bracket, and the bracket will hold the weight of the fan.

A flush mount ceiling fan has a small hook on the motor that connects to the bracket and holds the weight of the fan for wiring. The black wire is the hot wire and leads back to the wall switch. The white wire, known as neutral, completes the electrical circuit.

Installing a new ceiling fan with no blue wire…? HELP?

Before disconnecting any wires, make sure you write down what the original connections are. Write down exactly where each wire goes. You may want to take a large number of digital photos as well. However, it can be tricky to capture all the details. Taking close-ups in medium light will generally lead to a very small depth of field.

A flash can cast sharp shadows that obscure details.

In this video, we learn how to repair a defective ceiling fan light switch with Richard Wright. There are two types of switches: two wire and three wire, grab the .

Watch video of this step. If you have access from above, you can make and install your own support brace using a length of 2×4 lumber nailed to the ceiling joists on both sides of the box location Image 2. Position the brace directly above the ceiling box. From below, use wood screws to attach the ceiling box securely to the brace. If you do not have access to work above the ceiling, you can install an expanding metal brace from below to support the ceiling box and fan.

First, remove the existing box, then insert the brace up through the hole and secure it in position by ratcheting the mechanism into place. As the ratchet is turned from below, arms on the brace extend until they contact the ceiling joists on both sides of the hole Image 3 demonstration. The spikes on the arms anchor securely into the wood. Some braces are available with a ceiling box attached, or you can attach the existing ceiling box to the brace. This method also may be used to mount a fan on a ceiling where no electrical fixture was previously installed.

After a hole is cut in the ceiling, electrical wiring is routed to the hole from a convenient nearby junction box, then the brace and a new ceiling box are installed as described above.

Ceiling Fans

I would like to wire two ceiling fans — the power comes into the box first — I would also like to have two separate switches for lights and fans. Any diagrams would be helpful. Thanks for your help. In the question above, I am assuming that this is a new installation, and as I understand the question, the power now comes in to the first ceiling box intended for mounting the ceiling fan. In roughing in wiring for a ceiling box that has a potential to have a ceiling fan installed either now, or in the future, it prudent to wire the circuit for separate control of the fan and the light kit on individual switches.

Make sure you mount the ceiling outlet boxes firmly, and with extra support so as to handle the additional weight of the fan.

Jan 02,  · Hook the white wire in the switch box with the white wite fron the fan. Take the black incoming wire and connect to the black wire on the switch. Hook up the blue wire to the to the black wire feeding the fan, and the red wire to the red wire feeding the lights.

The addition of a remote control to a ceiling fan allows you to easily adjust the comfort level of a room. This is a feature my wife particularly appreciates, as she can cool our bedroom at night without having to get out of bed. I have covered the installation of a standard ceiling fan in great detail in earlier website posts and videos. We begin by unpacking the contents of the box, and referring to the instruction manual to ensure that all the parts are present.

As always, pay particular attention to the standard safety instructions, which are mainly centered around turning off the appropriate circuit breaker and verifying the absence of power in the outlet box by using a reliable voltage tester or an electrical meter before you begin the installation of the ceiling fan unit. It is also very important that the outlet box that you will be mounting the fan to is securely fastened to the structure with adequate backing and mounting methods capable of supporting the weight of the ceiling fan.

The outlet box I am using here is in a newly constructed home, and the ceiling boxes are mounted appropriately, and are intended to be used to support a ceiling fan. Follow the step by step instructions for the assembly of the fan parts, and the mounting directions as with any ceiling fan. As stated previously, in this post we will primarily focus on the connections to the receiving unit.

When the mounting hardware is in place, pull out the supply wires and prepare them for the connections.

Bk to Bk – Wh to Wh – Blue to blue or whatever the light wire color is. The green wire in the ceiling box or bare copper wire is your ground wire and should be connected to the green wire of the fan, and also should be mechanically connected to the electrical box by a screw or clip. If your system was wired correctly you should find that it already is connected to the box. The white wire in the ceiling box is your neutral wire, so any and all white wires from the fan should be connected to it.
